Brighton Artist Danny Ingram: Colour, light and a little bit of chaos
Hello, I’m Danny, the Brighton artist behind Dingram Arts. I paint in acrylics, usually with a lot of colour, a little drama and an unreasonable amount of thought about where the light should go.
Brighton gives me plenty to work with. I’m drawn to its familiar landmarks, but also to the feeling around them: the glow of a building after dark, a quiet stretch of promenade, the last light catching the West Pier, or the way an ordinary street can suddenly look theatrical. The Royal Pavilion, the Clock Tower and the seafront have all found their way into my paintings. I like taking places we think we know and giving them a different mood.
My work often begins with a strong contrast or a question about colour. What happens if the sky goes almost black? How much can one small light change a scene? I build up acrylic paint in layers, sometimes keeping an edge crisp and graphic, sometimes letting the texture and brush marks have their say. Reflections, silhouettes and unexpected flashes of colour help lead your eye through the picture.
And then there are the creatures. Dragons, frogs and octopuses have joined the Brighton scenes because I enjoy making work with a sense of character and mischief. There is room here for a painting to be beautiful, strange and funny all at once.
Each piece has its own story, even when I leave space for you to find yours. Music often becomes part of that story too. Some prints come with a note from me and a track to listen to while you spend time with the artwork. Because all of life has a soundtrack.
Dingram Arts is my way of bringing these ideas together: paintings and fine art prints full of colour, light and a little bit of chaos. Have a look around, see what catches your eye, and I hope you find something that makes you stop for a moment.
